"The Four Strong Foundations of the Early Church: *the Word, Baptism, Fellowship, and Prayer*"

Many people today desire a strong church.

We want beautiful buildings, beautiful worship, modern technology, and large numbers.

But the question is:

What is the mark of a strong church in God's eyes?

The book of Acts paints a picture of the early church. They did not have large buildings, they had limited financial resources, and they faced opposition, but they were still spiritually strong because their lives were built on four foundations.

These four foundations are still essential today, not just for new believers, but for every church.


*First Foundation:* Accepting the Word of God

Acts 2:41

"Those who received his word with joy..."

Peter preached first, then people repented, then believed, then were baptized.

Salvation always begins with the Word of God.

Romans 10:17

"Faith comes by hearing."

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God...

Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is living and active.


*Practical Question*

Are we just hearing the sermon?

Or is the Word changing our lives?


*Second Foundation:* Baptism

Baptism does not save, but rather is a declaration of the obedience of the saved person.

Mark 16:16

"...believe and be baptized..."

Romans 6:3-4

"Abraham believed..."

Galatians 3:27

"Baptism into Christ..."

Baptism is a declaration that

"My old life is dead, and I am alive in Christ."


*Third Foundation:* The Apostles' Teaching and Church Fellowship

Acts 2:42

These people were not just Sunday believers.

They were constantly being taught.

Hebrews 10:25

"Gathering together..."

Ephesians 4:11-16

"Being joined together..."

1 Corinthians 12

"Many members..."

The church is one body.

If a hand is separated from the body, it cannot live.

In the same way, a believer becomes spiritually weak if he is separated from the church.

*Fourth Foundation: Prayer*

This is the central part of today's message.

Acts 2:42 says:

"They continued in prayer."

That is, prayer was a routine of their lives, not just an act of need.


What is prayer?

Many people think that prayer is just asking.

But according to the Bible, prayer is communion with God.

It is a living relationship.

Philippians 4:6-7

"Your requests, your prayers..."

1 John 5:14-15

The first condition of prayer

Faith in the existence of God

Hebrews 11:6

"He who comes to God must believe that He exists."

If a person is not sure that God is listening, then prayer is just words.

The second condition of prayer

Full *attention*

When we talk to an important person, our attention is not distracted.

So how much attention should we have before God?

Psalm 46:10

“Be still and know that I am God.”

Jeremiah 29:13

“You will seek me with all your heart.”

Jesus’ prayer is our example

Jesus was the Son of God.

Yet he prayed.

Luke 5:16

He would go out into the desert and pray.

Mark 1:35

He would get up early in the morning and pray.

Luke 6:12

He would spend the whole night in prayer.

John 17

This entire prayer shows us what a deep relationship with God is.

If Jesus needed prayer, how much more do we need it?

Three Types of Prayer

1 *. Private Prayer*

Matthew 6:6

Pray behind closed doors

A place where it is just you and God.

2. *Community Prayer*

Acts 1:14

Everyone prayed with one heart.

Acts 4:31

After prayer, the place was shaken.

Acts 12:5

The church prayed for Peter continuously.

Corporate prayer is a means of experiencing God’s power.


3. *Hypocrisy Prayer*

Matthew 6:5

Do not pray to be seen by others.

God does not look at the loudness of the voice, but at the sincerity of the heart.

*Time of Prayer*

Daniel had a set time for prayer.

Daniel 6:10

David also prayed at set times.

Psalm 55:17

Morning, noon, and evening.

Acts 3:1

Peter and John went to pray at a set time.

The question is not whether we ever pray or not.

The question is:

Do we have a set time for prayer?

The lesson from Acts 16

A slave girl with an evil spirit kept saying:

“These are the servants of God…”

This was true.

But the spirit was unclean.

Acts 16:16-18

This teaches us that

just the right words are not enough.

God wants a pure heart.

Prayer and the Second Coming of Jesus

Jesus said:

Luke 21:36

"Watch and pray at all times."

Matthew 26:41

"Watch and pray so that you may not enter into temptation."

1 Thessalonians 5:17

"Pray without ceasing."

If we truly believe in the coming of Jesus, our prayer life will also be alive.

Self-Accountability

Ask yourself:

Do I spend time with God every day?

Do I pray only when I need to?

Do I participate in the corporate prayer of the church?

Is my faith only in words or is it also expressed in prayer?


Conclusion

This was the secret to the success of the early church:

✔ The Word of God (true teaching...)

✔ Baptism

(leaving the old and putting on the new humanity...)

✔ Fellowship

(church worship and welfare...)

✔ Prayer

(conversation with the living God the Father... fellowship...)

If these four foundations are strong in our lives, our church will also be strong, our families will be strong, and our faith will also be strong.

"O Heavenly Father, teach us to love Your Word. Keep us steadfast in our baptismal covenant. Make us faithful in the fellowship of the church. Let our prayers not be formal but filled with faith, presence, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Make us believers who walk with You every day and are ready for the glorious coming of Jesus Christ. Amen."
